Mark Carney, former governor of the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England, has been elected as the new leader of the Liberal Party of Canada. At a convention that saw crowds in red and white waving Canadian flags in Ottawa on Sunday, Carney was announced as the winner and is set to replace Justin Trudeau as prime minister once he is sworn in.

Trudeau served as Canada’s Prime Minister for over nine years, marked by both triumphs and controversies. Eric Sorensen looks back at his time in office, reflecting on the highs and lows of his leadership.

South of the border, U.S. President Donald Trump is said to be demanding Ukrainian President Volodomyr Zelenskyy not only sign a deal giving the U.S. access to Ukraine’s rare earth minerals, but he wants him to show a change in attitude, too — being open to making concessions to Russia. Trump has already suspended military aid and intelligence sharing with Ukraine, but he has not demanded any concessions from Russian President Vladimir Putin. As Candice Cole reports, there are plans for more peace talk this week.
