The city of Surrey, B.C., is calling on Ottawa to declare a state of emergency over hundreds of extortion cases across the country.

Early Monday, Surrey police seized a loaded handgun from a vehicle and arrested foreign nationals, 20-year-old Harshdeep Singh and 21-year-old Hanspreet Singh, after hearing gunshots.

“This is transnational and international crime, and we need the federal government to help us on many fronts,” Surrey Mayor Brenda Locke said.
