In what Montreal’s police chief called a “real nightmare” on Monday morning, a civilian, police officer and suspect are dead after the SPVM responded to a call about a man firing a weapon. The area of Côte-des-Neiges went into lockdown and police issued an emergency alert, warning residents about an “armed threat” and to stay indoors.
Police Chief Fady Dagher said a second officer was also seriously injured in the shooting but is in stable condition. Dagher said he did not know who shot the civilian. Police were contacted around 11:35 a.m., reporting a person who was sticking a long gun out from a window at the Hilton hotel. Police say they arrived at the scene and were targeted with gunfire.
As Dan Spector reports, it’s been 24 years since a Montreal police officer has been killed in the line of duty.
