The trial of Raphaël Plamondon and the video of the July 2024 intervention offer a rare, “first-person” look inside the Québec Detention Facility—a fascinating deep dive into the work of correctional officers.
Even though they possess certain types of “pepper spray” up to five or six times more potent than those used by police, Plamondon was reportedly not overly affected, as shown in the video of the intervention, which lasted just under an hour.
“He would take the grenade and spray it directly into his eyes and mouth. He is the only incarcerated person I have seen not react to inflammatory agents in more than 500 interventions in my career,” the officer told the jury, under the amused gaze of Raphaël Plamondon in the prisoner’s dock.
