One and a half years ago, while exploring the backroads of Appalachia, I met a man named James in Owsley County, Kentucky. He quickly became a fan favourite—not because he was trying to be famous, but because he was simply being himself. Honest, unforgettable, and uniquely Appalachian.
After more than a year away, I decided to return to Appalachia and visit my old friend once again on our roadtrip home from Miami. I had no idea what to expect, but during our conversation James shared some heartbreaking news: he had recently been diagnosed with brain cancer.
What started as a simple reunion quickly became something much more meaningful.
In this video, I travel back through the mountains of Eastern Kentucky to catch up with James, spend time with him and his dogs, hear his story, and reflect on how much can change in just a year and a half. It’s a reminder to appreciate the people we meet in life, because tomorrow is never guaranteed.
