At Canada’s busiest port, thousands of containers move through every day. Now, the head of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) says some of the precursor chemicals used to make fentanyl are also passing through Canada.
“When you look at the United States, they have tightened their port security a lot over the last couple of years. And so, it’s just natural that the Mexican cartels are still interested in shipping their products through our port,” Delta Mayor George Harvie said.
Both the RCMP and CBSA say Canada is not a major fentanyl exporter — and U.S. seizure data backs that up. Last year, authorities seized more than 5,200 kilograms at the southern border, compared to just 35 kilograms at the northern border. Aaron McArthur reports.
