A Canadian man is behind bars in the U.S. after running a so-called grandparent scam that ran out of Montreal. Stefano Zanetti lived a lavish beachfront lifestyle in Panama off the proceeds of his crimes, driving a Porsche, flying on private planes and owning boats. However, Zanetti’s version of R&R was ripping off seniors while relaxing on the beach.
Zanetti ran a popular jet ski company in the resort town of Buenaventura as his cover, believing he would remain undetected. But U.S. investigators caught on, and he was identified to be the lynchpin in an international conspiracy designed to systematically steal money from elderly victims in the United States.
Last week, Zanetti was sentenced to 15 and a half years in prison. Twenty-five other Canadians were also charged.
As Touria Izri reports, he admitted stealing as much as three-and-a-half million dollars from seniors in his plea deal.
